The end of 2017 is upon us. Whether your 2017 was amazing or terrible I wish you all the best in 2018. I have very mixed feelings about this year. I feel like DevOps and open source software as a whole had a good 2017. I think 2018 will be quite interesting for this space. There will be numerous opportunities for open source software and its methodologies to continue to penetrate deeper into industries like the automotive and banking spaces.

I’m going to keep the monologue pretty short this week. I have some lightly scoped out ideas to share in 2018 though so don’t worry, lots more to come. It has been a rough week in the Short household and I’m mentally spent. But, there was a ton DevOps, Cloud Native, and open source of news this week. We have been totally buried by snow this week in Michigan. The daily snow forecasts have been underestimated by inches almost everyday. Not a big deal, it’s just a lot of powdery snow early in the winter. It’ll probably be a white Christmas here in the Detroit metro area. Meanwhile, the job hunt is an odd mix of hot and cold. To be honest, I was hoping to have something pretty solid coming back from KubeCon.

I have been through the highest of highs and lowest of lows this week. But, Thanksgiving is an interesting time to reflect. What are you thankful for? How do you want to finish out the year? I am beyond thankful for an incredibly supportive family. It was not an easy decision to make but it was a move that needed to happen. I am considering writing a postmortem for the whole ordeal. I’m not sure I’ll ever publish it. But, it is something many others could benefit from.

Happy Veteran’s Day (in the US)! Thank you to all those that have served. I appreciate everyone that took a moment tweet, text, and call me to thank me for my service today. This week, I found a picture with two meanings: 1) Thank you veterans, 2) the basics are SO important. When things get hard you revert back to habits be they bad or good. In basic training, you develop a sense of what to do in almost every situation.

Strong opinions, loosely held: is a state of mind I’ve been striving to achieve both personally and professionally. Coming from a military background, this is an incredibly hard thing to do. The Air Force, despite its rank and structure, optimized itself around free-thinking innovation. You could easily come in and punch the clock and leave at the end of the day in the Air Force. But, if you wanted to go further, it helped if you thought outside the box.

All Things Open is one of my most looked forward to conferences of the year. I had already committed to attending before I moved to Detroit and I’m so glad I was able to go.
