DevOps'ish

DevOps, Cloud Native, Hybrid Cloud, Open Source, industry news, culture, and the ‘ish between.

DevOps’ish 224: Take your time off, Bryan Liles on a mission, John McAfee dead, Dell SupportAssist assisting the wrong people, AWS DNS hijack, Istio 1.10, Intel to make RISC-V chips, and more

Let me be someone to remind you to take some time off (if you can). As a family, we had many lessons learned from not being in our daily routines, setting, or location. This whole month has been a lot of optimizations in our household. All these learned from being outside our sixteen-month grooves. For example, I confirmed I needed glasses after a persistent headache went away then came back when I went back to work. Read more β†’

DevOps’ish 212: Linux lawsuit, universities breached, massive Facebook breach, Amazon’s horrible PR in light of conditions, Git Submodules = πŸ‘Ώ, GitOpsCon CFP, and more

An old headline rears its ugly head again this week. The company that now owns the remnants of The SCO Group (whose claim to fame was going bankrupt in suing Linux distro makers until their dying breath), Xinuos, has decided to try this strategy out for itself in hopes of a different outcome. Xinuos is suing IBM and Red Hat for using Linux. Talk about bringing back ancient memories of trying to keep up with a new and essential thing to me back in the early 2000s: Linux. Read more β†’

DevOps’ish 207: Solarwinds, 4 hour a week Kubernetes maintainer, mischievous Mailchimp, secrets management, Digital Ocean IPO, Sysdig, BOOP, Flux, and More

DevOps’ish is in a state of spring cleaning. First, I’ve found a tool that I like more than Pocket to bookmark and save pages in Raindrop.io. All the Recommended Reads automation is now pulling from Raindrop.io. Then three Zapier rules ferry everything off to the appropriate places. I made that transition midweek. DevOps’ish 204: Jassy’s New Jam, KubeCon EU for $10, WFH? Wait for vaccine, GCP lost $5.6B in 2020, cloud shells compared, Well switch my qubits! and more

This week’s biggest stories (my opinion): Email from Jeff Bezos to employees Jassy in charge of the juggernaut come Q3. Deserted Island DevOps 2021: Call for Speakers/Papers @ Sessionize.com I gotta hype this event. It was a very well done event last year. KubeCon EU Registration Now Open $10 for a limited time. The Next Cyberattack Is Already Under Way A few nits, but otherwise accurate. People Don’t Underestimate the Power of a Walk Read more β†’

Life is about balance. The struggle is achieving it.

073: DevOps Hiring Guide, RIP RTFM, BGP & DNS, Kubernetes, GitLab, and More

I had a lot going on this week. From dealing with bureaucracy at the second largest department of the US government to debugging Jinja2 code in Ansible playbooks to wrangling a toddler that isn’t feeling all that great to dealing with my constant nemesis; long thoracic nerve palsy and winging of the scapula. I have a lot on my plate all the time and I’m okay with that. I enjoy it most of the time. Read more β†’
