Chicago River from Michigan Ave Bridge after ChefConf

077: ChefConf 2018, GDPR, Go CoC πŸ™Œ, Go vgo 😞, Kubernetes, Laptop Giveaway, Security, and More

I have a lot to talk about this week. I’m putting sections in the introduction for ease of reading (feel free to skip parts you’re not mildly interested in). Also, thank you to this week’s sponsors; Replicated and GoCD! ChefConf 2018 The highlight of my week was being able to meet 1,400 new friends at ChefConf 2018 in Chicago. Travel is fatal to prejudice, bigotry, and narrow-mindedness, and many of our people need it sorely on these accounts. β€”Mark Twain

064: DODCLT, {code} death knell, Leadership, Kubernetes Good and Bad, Docker and moving on from it, and More!

I’m fresh off the plane from DevOpsDays Charlotte 2018 when I’m writing this. I have to say a HUGE thank you to the organizers, sponsors, and speakers. The venue was beyond amazing. Red Ventures knows how to host a crowd in style. I definitely feel like I need to fly out the morning after these events though. Traveling on a Friday is not ideal. It never fails that I end up missing a connection I wanted to make because I just flat out ran out of time. Read more β†’

Seeing the light

063: Kubernetes Tips & Tricks, Leadership, Serverless, dtrace for Linux, Azure for Go, and More!

I listened to a very impactful podcast on Wednesday while walking my best buddy beast (happy birthday, Sunny). On the podcast, the speaker asked the audience five questions. One of those questions was, “When was the last time you changed your mind?” This question struck me. When was the last time I changed my mind? What motivated me to make that change? Would I be able to help others make a similar change should they ask for assistance? Read more β†’

062: Saddling Up, Mergers, Deaths, What’s Up with 18F, Chaos Engineering, Performance Impact of Meltdown and More!

This was a very interesting week for me. I participated in a chronic pain treatment study at the Ann Arbor VA Hospital early Tuesday morning. The experience, while odd, went incredibly well. Today is the first day I have felt noticeable pain which is likely due to managing Max at my nephew’s birthday date. If you know me, you know this is an incredible feat. On Thursday, I attended a brand new Kubernetes Meetup in Downtown Detroit. Read more β†’

Merry Christmas!

055: Rough Week, DevOps Culture, Kubernetes, and More!

I’m going to keep the monologue pretty short this week. I have some lightly scoped out ideas to share in 2018 though so don’t worry, lots more to come. It has been a rough week in the Short household and I’m mentally spent. But, there was a ton DevOps, Cloud Native, and open source of news this week. I hope you had a Happy Hanukkah or Happy Festivus and I wish all of you a Merry Christmas. Read more β†’

Happy Veteran's Day

049: Basics, Kubernetes, Intel is Blowing It, IDEs, Go, and More

Happy Veteran’s Day (in the US)! Thank you to all those that have served. I appreciate everyone that took a moment tweet, text, and call me to thank me for my service today. This week, I found a picture with two meanings: 1) Thank you veterans, 2) the basics are SO important. When things get hard you revert back to habits be they bad or good. In basic training, you develop a sense of what to do in almost every situation. Read more β†’
